Each moon phase emoji below can be copied in one click. Use the names to compare waxing vs waning without guessing.
New moon: the near side faces Earth in shadow β no bright slice visible. The lunar cycle starts here.
Waxing crescent: a thin bright edge grows on the right (Northern view) after new moon; βwaxingβ means the lit part is increasing.
First quarter: half the disk is lit on the right. The Moon is about one week into its ~29.5-day cycle.
Waxing gibbous: more than half lit and still growing toward full moon β βgibbousβ means a bulging, not-quite-full shape.
Full moon: the entire near side catches sunlight. Maximum brightness in the eight-emoji set.
Waning gibbous: still more than half lit, but the bright area shrinks after full moon β βwaningβ means decreasing.
Last quarter (third quarter): half lit on the left. The cycle is about three quarters complete before the next new moon.
Waning crescent: a thin slice on the left before the next new moon; only a sliver of the disk stays sunlit.
Millions of people paste emojis into passwords, bios, and group chats every day. A smaller but highly motivated slice needs the correct moon phase emoji today because a puzzle game locks them out until they get Rule 13 right. They are not looking for a NASA chart of illumination percentages β they want one tap copy of the right character.
MoonEmojis puts that answer on the first screen. You see the phase symbol, the UTC date, and a copy button without scrolling.
Astronomers track the Moon through a synodic month of about 29.53 days. The Password Game compresses that cycle into eight equal segments, each mapped to π through π. Roughly every three to four days the accepted emoji advances to the next slot. That rhythm matches how players describe the game: you might reuse the same moon phase emoji for several daily attempts, then suddenly need a new one.
Our calculator aligns to UTC midnight because that is the community convention for daily resets. The line updated daily at 00:00 UTC under the hero emoji is deliberate β players in Tokyo and Los Angeles both know when the answer rolls forward. If your local clock still says October 15 while UTC is already October 16, follow the UTC date on this page.
Standing in Santiago or Sydney, you see the bright edge of the crescent Moon on the opposite side from someone in London or New York. Emoji art is fixed, so MoonEmojis mirrors the eight symbols when you choose Southern Hemisphere. Waxing and waning crescents swap, as do the quarter and gibbous icons, while new and full moons stay the same worldwide.
If you only play the Password Game and never look at the real sky, northern mode is the default most walkthroughs assume. If you also want the character to feel visually honest for your location, toggle south before you copy. Either way you still get a valid phase from the official eight β the toggle adjusts presentation, not the underlying day in the lunar cycle.
