Which moon phase is today?
Today's phase is one of these eight, and it changes as the Moon moves through its monthly cycle. This page lists every symbol and how they fit together β it does not show the live answer.
Waxing vs waning β which side is lit
In the Northern Hemisphere emoji art, bright on the right means waxing: the lit part is growing toward full moon. Bright on the left means waning: the lit part is shrinking after full moon. New and full moons are the exceptions β π is all dark and π is all light.
Crescent moon emoji
βCrescent moon emojiβ usually means a thin slice, not a single Unicode name. In the eight-phase set, waxing crescent is π waxing crescent emoji and waning crescent is π waning crescent emoji. π Crescent Moon is separate and is not one of the eight phases.

FAQ
- What are the 8 moon phase emojis?
- They are π new moon, π waxing crescent, π first quarter, π waxing gibbous, π full moon, π waning gibbous, π last quarter, and π waning crescent β in that order through a ~29.5-day cycle.
- Which moon phase emoji should I use today?
- Only one of the eight matches a given UTC day. Do not guess from this list β open the current phase of the moon emoji page for today's answer and a copy button.
- Are moon phase emojis reversed in the Southern Hemisphere?
- The real phase is the same worldwide, but the lit side appears on the opposite horizon. Emoji art is fixed, so apps mirror waxing and waning shapes for southern viewers. The eight characters are the same; presentation can flip left and right.
- Is π a moon phase emoji?
- No. π is Crescent Moon, a generic crescent. The eight phase emojis are π through π. Password Game Rule 13 and similar tools expect one of those eight, not π.
- Do moon phase emojis look the same on iPhone and Android?
- The Unicode code points are the same, so you copy the right character everywhere. Apple, Google, and Samsung draw them with slightly different styles, but the phase (waxing vs waning, half vs full) stays recognizable.
